my pothos cuttings have been sitting in water for six weeks and the roots are getting really long, like 15cm. everyone says to pot them up but i am scared they will die in soil after living in water this long. when is the right moment to move them?

the longer they sit, the harder the move gets — water roots and soil roots are built differently, so a long-soaked cutting has to grow a whole second root system once it's potted. 15cm is already past ideal. pot them now into a light, airy mix, keep it a touch more evenly moist than normal for the first fortnight while it adjusts, and expect a droopy day or two. that's the transition, not the end.

to soften the shock: use a really open mix (plenty of perlite) and keep humidity up for the first week with a clear bag propped loosely over the top, not sealed. and don't read one dropped leaf as failure — re-rooting costs them a leaf sometimes and then they carry on.
