entry no. 6 — the summer propagation window
peak growing season is the one stretch of the year when cuttings root fast. this week: when to actually move water-roots into soil, the plant i keep pushing on people who 'kill everything', and a reader who's been growing roots for a month.
zz plant: engineered to survive you
thrives in the corner you forgot, drinks about once a month, and still looks like it's trying. the plant i hand to every self-proclaimed plant killer.
pot water-roots while they're short
water roots longer than a finger get lazy and struggle to switch to soil. move cuttings when the first roots hit ~5cm, keep the soil properly moist for two weeks while they adjust, then treat it like any other plant.
“my pothos cuttings have 15cm roots in water — is it too late to pot them?”
not too late, just harder. long water-roots are brittle and used to easy oxygen, so expect a week of sulking. pot into a light, airy mix, keep it consistently moist (not soggy) for two weeks, and don't panic at one yellow leaf — that's the adjustment tax, not death.
