my cactus has gone soft and slightly translucent at the base after i moved it to the bathroom. is it overwatered or just cold? it sits next to the shower now.

soft and translucent at the base is rot, not cold — and honestly a steamy bathroom next to the shower is the worst possible spot for a cactus. get it back to your brightest, driest windowsill today. if the mush is only right at the base you can behead it above the firm tissue, let the cut dry and callus for a few days, then re-root the healthy top in dry gritty mix. squishy means water, not chill.

agreed. cold makes mine go shrivelled and hard, never soft and see-through. soft plus translucent is the emergency version — act before it creeps up the stem, because once it's climbing there's much less to save.
