Leggy plant? It isn't thirsty, it's stretching for light
Long stems, wide gaps between leaves, new growth leaning at the window: not a watering problem, however tempting the can looks. The fix is light, then scissors.

Long bare stems, wide gaps between leaves and small pale new growth leaning toward the window mean the plant is stretching for light — this is one of the few houseplant symptoms where more water is not the answer. Fix it in two steps: move the plant somewhere genuinely brighter, or add a grow light if no spot qualifies, then cut each stretched stem a few millimeters above a node so the plant branches lower down instead of reaching further. The stretched sections themselves never tighten back up or become compact — you're not repairing that growth, you're shaping what grows next, and the cuttings from the prune can usually be rooted into new plants instead of thrown out.

The tell — Long stretches of bare stem between leaves, new leaves noticeably smaller and paler than the older ones, the whole plant leaning toward the nearest window.
The fix — Run the shadow test: hold a hand 30cm above the plant at midday. A soft, fuzzy-edged shadow means the spot has enough light; barely any shadow means it doesn't. Move the plant to the brightest spot in the home that passes the test, and give it a quarter turn weekly so it doesn't lean.

The stretched stems themselves, once light is already fixed
The tell — Light has improved, or was never really the problem, but the old stems are still long, bare and thin — new growth alone won't fill in the gaps already there.
The fix — Cut each leggy stem a few millimeters above a node — the bump or leaf scar where a leaf meets the stem. Removing the growing tip wakes up dormant buds below the cut, and the plant usually sends out more than one new shoot from there, which is what actually makes it bushy.

No spot in the home is bright enough, period
The tell — Even the best spot you have still fails the shadow test at midday — no soft shadow anywhere, even right by the glass.
The fix — Add a full-spectrum white LED bulb in an ordinary lamp, 30–60cm above the foliage, running 10–12 hours a day on a cheap timer. It's the only fix physics allows once the room itself doesn't get enough sun.

Normal vining habit mistaken for legginess
The tell — The stem is long, but the leaves along it are normal-sized and evenly spaced, not shrinking or spaced further and further apart.
The fix — Leave it — a long trailing stem with healthy, evenly-spaced leaves is just the plant's mature shape, not a light problem. Prune it only if you want it bushier rather than longer, using the same above-a-node cut.
