Why light is the master variable

A plant does not eat the food you give it. It makes its own food out of light, water and air, and light is the part it cannot store or borrow. That is why light comes first: it sets the ceiling. A plant in poor light cannot use extra water, extra feed or a bigger pot — it just sits there, slowly getting leggier, reaching for a window that is too far away.

This is the thing nobody told me. I thought a struggling plant needed more attention — more water, more feed, more fussing. Usually it needed more light and less of everything else. Once you accept that light is the master variable, most care decisions get simpler, because you stop trying to compensate for a dim corner with things that only make dim corners wetter.

Tolerates is not thrives

Plant tags love the word tolerates. A snake plant tolerates low light — that means it will not die quickly, not that it will grow. Tolerates is a survival word. Thrives is a growth word. Keep the two apart in your head and you will stop expecting a low-light survivor to reward you with new leaves it never had the light to build.
