When to relax

After this you can tell the difference between attentive care and fussing.

The last lesson is the one that took me longest to learn: you can care too much. Once the routine is running and a plant is settled and growing, the kindest thing is often to leave it alone. Constant repotting, moving, watering and prodding is stress, not love. A plant that has put out a new leaf is telling you it is fine — believe it.

Signs you can relax

  • New leaves or a growing tip — the clearest all-is-well signal there is
  • The plant holds steady week to week on the walk, no new problems appearing
  • It has settled into a predictable drying rhythm you can read at a glance
  • Old lower leaves occasionally yellow and drop — normal, not a crisis, on an otherwise healthy plant
