Salt build-up and flushing

After this you can recognise fertiliser salt build-up and flush it out.

Fertilisers are mineral salts. Every time you feed, a little is taken up by the plant and a little is left behind in the soil. Over months, especially if you feed too often or too strong, those leftover salts accumulate. You can sometimes see it: a white or yellowish crust on the soil surface or around the pot rim. The plant shows it as browning, crisping leaf tips and edges.

How to flush the salts

1.Take the plant to a sink, bath or outside.
2.Pour lots of plain water slowly through the soil — several times the pot's volume — letting it run out the drainage hole and away.
3.This dissolves the accumulated salts and carries them out the bottom.
4.Let the pot drain fully before it goes back on its saucer, and ease off on feeding.
